Unlocking the Potential of Chinese Medicine and Acupuncture for IVF and Fertility

Embarking on the journey to parenthood is a deeply personal and often challenging endeavor. At the Chee Balance Acupuncture and Chinese medicine clinic, our commitment to holistic healthcare extends beyond the realms of pain management, reaching into the intricacies of fertility and family planning through the time-tested principles of Chinese medicine and acupuncture.

Acupuncture support pregnancy through various mechanisms that involve both physiological and psychological factors. While individual responses can vary, research and clinical experience suggest several ways in which acupuncture positively impact fertility and pregnancy:

a) Improved Blood Flow to Reproductive Organs:

Acupuncture enhances blood circulation, including increased blood flow to the uterus and ovaries. Improved blood supply may create a more favorable environment for embryo implantation and development.

b) Regulation of Hormones:

Acupuncture influences the endocrine system, helping to regulate hormones essential for the menstrual cycle and reproductive function. This hormonal balance is crucial for ovulation, egg quality, and overall fertility.

c) Reduced Stress and Anxiety:

Stress and anxiety can have a negative impact on fertility. Acupuncture is known to induce a state of relaxation by influencing the nervous system, reducing stress hormones, and promoting a sense of well-being. A more relaxed state may enhance fertility and increase the chances of conception.

d) Balancing the Menstrual Cycle:

Irregular menstrual cycles or disruptions in the menstrual cycle can affect fertility. Acupuncture helps regulate the menstrual cycle by influencing the release of hormones such as follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH) and luteinizing hormone (LH).

e) Optimizing Ovarian Function:

Acupuncture may stimulate blood flow to the ovaries, potentially improving ovarian function. This can have positive effects on the development and release of eggs.

Scientific Evidence: Acupuncture's Impact on IVF Success

In a ground-breaking systematic review and meta-analysis published earlier this year, showing the results were nothing short of remarkable: acupuncture not only increased the chances of pregnancy but also demonstrated a 51% reduction in the risk of biochemical pregnancies.

The study meticulously analysed 25 IVF and acupuncture Randomized Controlled Trials (RCTs) involving 4,757 participants. The findings were as follows:

a) 28% Increase in Implantation Rates: Across six trials and 2,017 participants, acupuncture significantly boosted implantation rates during IVF.

b) 33% Surge in IVF Clinical Pregnancy Rates: In 25 trials with 4,757 participants, acupuncture emerged as a key factor in enhancing IVF clinical pregnancy rates.

c) Moreover, the frequency of acupuncture sessions played a pivotal role in achieving positive outcomes. Having at least four sessions increased the chances of Contraceptive Prevalence Rate (CPR) by an impressive 43%, while even fewer sessions demonstrated a notable 30% increase in CPR.
